Am I a Good Candidate for Dentures?
Anyone who is missing most or all of their teeth, or who has to have their teeth removed due to severe damage or decay, is a good candidate for dentures. It is essential to have healthy gums and a sufficient jawbone structure to support dentures. However, bone grafting can help build up the jawbone for some patients. Good oral hygiene is crucial to the success of dentures. If you are unwilling or unable to undergo invasive surgery for implants, dentures are a great alternative.

Denture FAQs
What types of dentures are there?
Depending on your needs, there are several types of dentures available:
- A conventional denture is made after all teeth have been extracted and the tissues (gums) have healed. · An immediate denture is fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted, allowing the tissues to heal under the denture.
- An upper denture typically features acrylic, usually in a flesh-colored shade, that covers the palate (the roof of the mouth).
- A lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate the tongue.
The teeth are made of plastic, porcelain, or a combination of both. Dentures can be fabricated to fit over endodontically treated teeth, and a complete denture can be attached to dental implants to allow for a more secure fit of the appliance.
Do I have to remove my dentures at night?
Yes. Removing them while you sleep gives your gums and jawbone a chance to rest, allowing saliva to lubricate your gums and mouth.
How do I care for my dentures?
Brush your dentures, both inside and outside, daily with a soft, large nylon denture toothbrush featuring round-ended bristles. Use denture creams instead of toothpaste, which can be too abrasive and scratch your dentures. Rinse with cold water, and when not wearing them, cover the denture with water or a denture cleaning solution to prevent it from drying out.
Inspect your dentures regularly for wear or damage. If they become loose or you notice signs of wear, please get in touch with us to schedule an appointment so we can make any necessary repairs or adjustments.
How much pain is involved with getting dentures?
There may be some discomfort for the first few weeks, although it shouldn’t be severe pain. Your mouth, particularly the sensitive gum tissue, needs some time to adjust to the dentures. During the first few weeks, you may experience some of the following:
- Sore gums
- Pressure points
- Increased saliva
- Minor difficulty pronouncing some words
- Some minor problems with chewing
All of these should resolve themselves quickly as you become used to wearing your dentures. If they do not, please get in touch with Dr. Civils, as you may need your dentures adjusted for a better fit.
