Bleeding Gums

If your gums are bleeding, it could be a sign that you have developed gum disease. We encourage you to contact our office at 336-272-4177 as soon as possible to schedule an appointment with our dentist. Dr. David Civils will evaluate your gums to determine why they are bleeding and create a treatment plan to meet your needs.

Bleeding gums are a common sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Other common signs include:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Irritated gums
  • Gum recession
  • Teeth that appear longer
  • Loose teeth

Gum disease is a degenerative dental condition caused by harmful bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria infect and inflame the gums, and if this condition is not treated, it can eventually lead to tooth loss, bone loss and a number of other dental problems. Our dentist will check for gum disease during each of your regular dental exams and will work with you to help you learn how to avoid periodontal disease or create a treatment plan to manage the condition and improve your oral health.

You can reduce your risk of developing gum disease by:

  • Brushing and flossing regularly
  • Keeping your regular dental appointments for cleanings and exams
  • Using an antiseptic mouthwash
  • Avoiding smoking or using other tobacco products

Gum disease has also been linked to a number of serious medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and complications with pregnancy. We strongly encourage you to schedule an appointment with our dentist if you believe you may have gum disease.
