What are the Different Types of Orthodontics?

Orthodontics Greensboro, NC

Considering orthodontics as a way to straighten your teeth? There are a number of different types of orthodontics that can be considered. With modern dentistry, the options are beginning to grow. Currently, there are traditional braces, aligners, clear braces and more!

If you’re considering orthodontics, then you may find this information to be helpful. We highlight the most common types of orthodontics so that as you prepare, you can better decide. Ultimately, it is best to consult with an orthodontic specialist so that they can evaluate your teeth.

Types of orthodontics

The most common types of orthodontic treatment options are listed below.

Traditional braces

Traditional metal braces are the most standard type of orthodontics. They are affordable and reliable. Everyone is pretty familiar with these metal braces that are made up of wires and brackets. They have been around the longest and for good reason! They offer someone the ability to straighten crooked teeth as well as correct an under or overbite.

Each tooth has its own bracket cemented onto the surface. The wires run through each bracket, connecting them together. Over time, the brackets and wires will help to shift each tooth individually into a straighter place.

Ceramic braces

Another common type of orthodontics is ceramic braces, which are also known as clear braces. They too use brackets and wires to straighten the teeth or correct an uneven bite. However, instead of metal materials, they are made completely of ceramic. The brackets are ceramic, which means that they are very similar in color to natural teeth, and the wires are clear, making this orthodontic method hard to notice.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners are a type of orthodontic treatment that has grown in popularity with time. More and more people are considering these aligners to straighten their teeth because they don’t require wires or brackets, but rather, simple aligners.

Most clear aligners are removable, which makes the treatment process easier on the mouth. They can be taken out at any time, although they are advised to only be taken out for eating and cleaning. Also, the aligners are clear! Someone who doesn’t want their teeth straightening to be noticeable may find this orthodontics type to be more attractive.

Retainers

In some scenarios, orthodontic retainers may be an option for someone wanting to straighten their teeth. Typically, someone with minorly crooked teeth could benefit from wearing an orthodontic aligner. However, it is quite rare than an orthodontist recommends just a retainer as a type of treatment for straightening the teeth.
