Same Day Crowns Can Improve Your Smile Immediately

Posted on: June 5, 2019

Same day crowns have had a significant impact on dentistry. They allow dentists to help their patients protect their teeth or improve the appearance of their teeth without having to wait for several weeks, saving them a lot of time.

Immediately improve your smile with same day crowns

Dentists are able to create same day dental crowns in their office with the help of the Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) machine. This device uses 3D scans to produce dental crowns that match the shape and size of their patient’s teeth.

What steps are involved in the restoration process?

In the past, getting a dental crown required two trips to the dentist. During the first trip, the dentist makes an impression of the patient’s mouth and shaves part of the tooth the crown will be placed on to ensure a perfect fit. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory to be made, while the patient is given a temporary crown to protect the filed tooth. When the dental crown is ready, the dentist will call the patient to their office to complete the restoration process.

Using a CEREC machine, the procedure can be completed on the same day. Instead of using a putty material for the impression, the dentist will take an impression of the patient’s teeth with a 3D scan and have the same day crown ready in about 20 minutes. Once the dental crown is ready, the dentist will cement it in place and have the patient on their way within a couple of hours.

Advantages of same day crowns

The following are a few of the advantages these crowns have over traditional crowns:

  • They save time: CEREC machines speed up the time it takes to complete a dental restoration because the process is completed in a couple of hours and does not require a follow-up visit
  • They prevent injury: When patients have to make multiple trips to the dentist to get a dental crown, the temporary crowns they are given do not always fit in the mouth and can easily come loose. This often causes injury to the patient, which is avoided with the CEREC machine, which creates perfect fitting crowns
  • They save money: Multiple trips to the dentist and temporary crowns cost money. This is reduced by half because the same day crowns eliminate the need for multiple visits and temporary crowns
  • They prevent decay: The fact that temporary crowns can come loose leaves the affected tooth vulnerable to decay. Since same day crowns fit tightly, they hardly ever come loose, which helps to prevent tooth decay

Disadvantages of same day crowns

Dental crowns that are created with CEREC machines are made with ceramic, which is not as durable as some of the materials used to make traditional crowns in the laboratory, including fused to metal crowns.

Same day crowns allow dental patients to get their tooth restoration done in one visit, saving them a lot of time. If you are planning on getting a dental crown, make sure the dentist has a CEREC machine if you do not want to make multiple trips to get the procedure done.
