Are Clear Aligners Considered Orthodontics?

orthodontics Greensboro, NC

Many people have misaligned teeth, which might require orthodontics. If the issue is minor, it might seem like a cosmetic problem. But teeth that are misaligned might cause other complications. For instance, if the teeth are hard to clean, bacteria and plaque might build up. One reason that some people do not get treatment is that they believe braces have drawbacks. But clear aligners are one of the most popular alternatives to traditional braces.

About clear aligners

Clear aligners are plastic trays fitted to the patient’s teeth. A series will gradually guide the teeth into place. These can take around the same amount of time as regular braces will. However, if the patient had braces before, the time could be a bit shorter.

Clear aligners are still considered to be orthodontics. This is true even though the process is different for both the patient and the dentist. The aligners look different but work in the same way as wire braces do. These gently move the teeth to the right alignment over time. The aligners will be created to fit the tooth structure of each patient. The patient will still need to have regular appointments with a dentist.

But instead of going to an appointment to get the braces adjusted, the patient will switch the aligners. This will be done every other week to allow the teeth to continue to move to the right alignment. The patient can do this by themselves. However, the dentist still needs to check the teeth regularly to see that they are moving correctly. In the end, the result will be the same as traditional braces. The patient will have properly aligned teeth on both the bottom and the top jaw and will be able to show off a beautiful smile.

The advantages of using clear aligners

Some patients do not feel comfortable when wearing wire braces. This is even more the case for older teens or adults. The good news is that clear aligners can barely be seen on the teeth. That is a good option for those who want to maintain their appearance currently.

Aligners are often less invasive than traditional braces. It is easy to remove the aligners before drinking and eating. This means that patients can eat nearly any type of food as long as the teeth are cleaned afterward. The cost of the aligners will vary depending on the patient’s needs. Some cases are more complicated than others and require more complex treatment.

Choosing the right orthodontics option

It is important for you to talk to your dentist before deciding on a type of braces. Your personal preferences will also determine the right orthodontics option for you. Traditional braces might work better for some but look at your options. If you go for aligners, you will have to remember to wear them. But as long as you can commit to wearing them, aligners might be a good alternative for you.
