Are Clear Aligners and Invisalign the Same Treatment?
A growing trend in people wanting straight teeth is to use clear aligners or Invisalign® treatments. If you are considering an alternative to traditional braces, it is easy to get caught up in the similarities of various aligners without understanding the important differences.
The treatment process for aligners
All aligners work in the same way to gently and gradually help the teeth shift position. Rather than having brackets and metal wires that are tightened during the treatment process, new aligners are created for an individual based on the progress made. Replacing the old trays with the news ones helps the teeth receive the right amount of pressure to continue shifting until the desired result appears. The overall process of Invisalign® treatment is less invasive and uncomfortable than traditional braces, but there are some clear differences in the types of aligners available on the market.
The difference between aligners
Many people use a general term to refer to all types of clear aligners. However, while these aligners offer the same treatment, Invisalign® uses different technology and methods that set its trays apart from the rest in three important ways.
1. The trays are made from a unique material
Perhaps one of the biggest differences is that this particular brand of clear aligners is created from a material called SmartTrack® that is specific to the company. This material allows for more control over how teeth move, which makes the progression of treatment more predictable and reliable. Rather than using an ordinary soft plastic material, the stronger technology used by the Invisalign® brand produces improved results.
2. There is a version for teenagers
Aligners are not only for adults. Instead, there are options for teenagers who want to avoid traditional braces or the potential dental problems associated with wires and brackets. However, there is some concern over whether teenagers wear the trays as instructed. That being said, there is a solution that uses compliance indicators in the form of blue dots on the trays. If the blue dots do not fade, the individual is not wearing the trays as often as necessary. The indicators help treatment providers measure the success and progress of the aligners and are unique to Invisalign®.
3. The trays are a perfect fit for each individual
These aligners use 3D scanning technology to digitally measure the mouth and create the trays for each person. More than that, the trays are trimmed to fit an individual’s gum line so no discomfort or rubbing is felt along the gums. This ensures a unique fit that is comfortable for any given patient.
Having a beautiful smile is not something for people to avoid because of the embarrassment of wearing braces when there are clear aligners and Invisalign® options available. Rather, these aligners make it easier than ever for people of all ages to embrace treatment for straightening teeth. However, not all aligners are created equal. As slight as the differences seem at first glance, the small distinctions can have a huge impact on the progression of your treatment plan and the end result.
