Frequent Questions
These are the answers to the frequently-asked dental questions about Drs. David and Janna Civils' dental practice

Why doesn't my insurance pay more for dental procedures?
Dental insurance is very different than medical insurance. The dental insurance annual premiums are a small fraction of medical insurance premiums. Likewise, the amount of coverage in dental insurance is often a fraction of the coverage provided by medical insurance. Frequently there is a cap on the amount a dental insurance company will pay in a year as well as on any given procedure. This policy by dental insurance companies can be confusing.

It is best to read and clearly understand your policy. Also, ask the representatives in advance if needed procedures are covered and how much they will pay on that procedure. The reimbursement by an insurance company is a direct contract between our patient and the insurance company. It therefore has no connection to the fees in our office.

Why do I need to come to the dentist every six months if I brush and floss every day?
The value of preventative dentistry today is truly priceless. Our radiographs and diagnostic procedures will reveal problems that you cannot identify alone. Dental problems can be very serious without causing you many symptoms. You could have cavities, bone loss or even a developing undiagnosed cancer. None of these hurt.

If dental problems are identified early in our office they can often be addressed easily. Further, we are available to answer all of your questions regarding your oral health. We can offer recommendations on everything from treating bad breath to cosmetic tooth whitening.

What is the difference in tooth whitening done by a dentist and “Over the Counter” whitening products in the drug store?

The active ingredient is the same with both whitening products, however the products are not the same. The whitening products from our office are tested and controlled to reduce sensitivity. They contain additional buffers and/or Fluoride to minimize adverse sensitivity that can be caused by tooth whitening. Further, bleaching trays made in our office are custom built for your mouth. This is more efficient because of less contact with air and directed contact with your teeth. It allows the whitening agents reaction to concentrate on the tooth stain. Also, it minimizes the amount of whitening agent on the soft tissues (gums and cheeks).

Most importantly, whitening your teeth is not for everyone. There are complications that can result. You should be evaluated before beginning and then throughout the procedures. We are available to answer all of your questions regarding cosmetic tooth whitening.

What are dental veneers?
“Veneers” are shortened from the term “porcelain laminate veneers”. A porcelain veneer is a very thin sheet of porcelain that is bonded onto the front side of your teeth. Porcelain veneers are routinely used to make cosmetic corrections in teeth that are discolored, worn, chipped, or misaligned. Veneers can result in whiter, straighter and more pleasing smiles.
